Our gear units can be used flexibly. Be it for a specific customer solution or a standard application. Select your gear unit from a wide assortment. The right size, power, gear ratio, the right torque as well as design and surface. Tailored to your application requirements and to your area of application. What is a gear unit? A gear unit is required to convert the torque and speed of an upstream electric motor so that they meet the technical drive requirements of an application. For that reason, the gear unit is the central component of agearmotor.. How does a gear unit work? Based on the design, size, and gear unit stages, a gear unit transforms the speed of a motor into steps up or steps down. The resulting speed ratio i between the input speed and output speed is therefore one of the most important characteristic values of a gear unit. How powerful a gear unit is and the loads that it can convey depends on its maximum torque, measured in the physical unit newton meters [Nm]. What types of gear unit are available? Gear units are distinguished by the type of force flow that they transmit. As a result, there are three basic designs: Parallel-shaft gear units, right-angle gear units, and planetary gear units. Inparallel-shaft gear units and planetary gear units, the input and output shaft are positioned in one direction (on the same level). The power is therefore transmitted in a straight line. Parallel-shaft gear units are available in ahelical gear unitorparallel-shaft helical gear unitmounting position. Planetary gear unitsare a special form. With them, the power transmission is coaxial. In this case, the speed and torque of the input shaft – the central sun gear – are transmitted to an external annulus gear (on the output side) and transformed by three or more rotating planet gears. Their special feature: The input shaft and output shaft move in the same direction throughout this process. In combination with aservomotorplanetary servo gearmotorsprovide particularly high dynamics and precision. In right-angle gear units, in contrast, the drive shaft and output shaft are perpendicular to each other – with the result that the flow of force there is diverted at a right angle. There are three established versions of right-angle gear units. They includehelical-bevel gear units, helical-worm gear units, and, exclusively from SEW¿¿¿EURODRIVE, theSPIROPLAN® right-angle gear unit.
Get out of theory and into practical experience. Prospective specialists have to accumulate an ever deeper and broader knowledge of electrical as well as mechanical drive technology. Our training modules help to make theoretical content practically applicable. The modules are based on typical subject areas and lectures and are designed for educational institutions and organisations for further training, e.g. vocational schools and industry training centers as well as colleges and universities.

Our gearmotor modular system is oriented towards the diversity of your application areas. Chose your ideal drive from standard, servo, adjustable, stainless steel, or explosion-proof gearmotors. A gearmotor is a homogeneous and compact unit consisting of a gear unit and a motor. In electrical drive technology as produced by SEW¿¿¿EURODRIVE, it is also always an electric motor. The idea of a "motor-gear unit aggregate" can be traced back to a patent from the Bruchsal-based design engineer and entrepreneur Albert Obermoser in 1928: He invented the "Vorlegemotor" (geared motor) Since then, the gearmotor has been developed further and further and new types of gear unit have been invented. In terms of motors, direct current technology has become less important, therefore gear units are nowadays most often combined with AC motors or servomotors. How does a gearmotor work? The central role in the gearmotor is performed by the gear unit and its gear unit stages, the gear pairs. These features transmit the force of the motor from the input end to the output end. The gear unit therefore functions as a converter of speed and torque. In most application cases, the gear unit slows down the rotational speed of the motor while at the same time transmitting significantly higher torques than the electric motor alone could provide. With that in mind, the design of the gear unit determines whether a gearmotor is suitable for light, medium or heavy loads and for short or long power-applied hours. We refer to a reduction ratio or gear ratio based on whether a gear unit steps down or steps up the incoming speed from the motor (called the input speed). The speed ratio i between the input speed and output speed of the gear unit serves as a measure of this. Another important measured variable for a gearmotor is the maximum torque on the output side. This torque is specified in newton meters (Nm) and is the measurement for the force of the gearmotor and the load that it can move with that force. What types of gearmotor are available? The primary factor in determining the type of gearmotor is the direction of flow force of the gear unit. There are three different basic designs in this regard: Parallel-shaft gear units, right-angle gear units, and planetary gear units.
